The focus of the Emergency Management Training Program is to provide appropriate and relevant training courses to personnel that may have roles and responsibilities in a disaster event. Additionally, Emergency Management aims to educate the campus community on how to respond to an emergency situation.

Course Title: Facility Emergency Response Group

Description: This virtual course reviews the policies and procedures outlining how responding personnel on the School of Medicine campus will respond and manage campus emergencies that require coordination of multiple departments and multiple resources.

Course Objectives: At the end of this course, participants will be able to describe:

  • The response protocols for addressing extended emergencies involving more than one department
  • The defined roles/responsibilities among key departments during campus emergencies
  • The recommended sequential actions and documentation for multi-department field response emergencies

Target Audience: WashU School of Medicine staff with responsibilities that may require field response to any emergency on the medical campus. Key departments include, but are not limited to: Facilities Operations, Protective Services, Emergency Management, Environmental Health and Safety and Capital Projects.

Course Title: Crisis Management Team Orientation

Description: This virtual course is designed to familiarize those personnel with responsibilities within the EOC during an emergency on campus to the facility’s procedures and capabilities. Additionally, this course outlines roles and responsibilities in the EOC and the coordination concepts necessary for an effective response.

Course Objectives: The objectives of this course are to:

  • Introduce the Emergency Operation and Crisis Management Team’s organizational structure
  • Review the university’s All-Hazards Emergency Operations Plan, how to navigate the plan and how it guides actions during an emergency
  • Discuss EOC operations – what they are, where they occur, and who’s a part of them
  • Review resources available to CMT members and introduce the Emergency Management Team to new members

Course Title: Veoci User: Initial Training

Description: This in-person course is for designated personnel who will use the Veoci Incident Management software for information sharing and coordination during an incident. This training will familiarize users with the system’s interface as well as posting to the situation status board, submitting resource requests and sharing information and files through the cockpit.

Course Objectives: The objectives of this course are to:

  • Introduce new CMT members to the Veoci incident management system and how to gain access
  • Outline reasons to use Veoci, when it will be activated and how CMT members will be notified
  • Review how to use Veoci to communicate and coordinate with others during an incident

Target Audience: Newly designated WashU Crisis Management Team Members and all those who may potentially have a role in the university emergency operations center.

Course Title: Veoci User: Refresher Training

Description: This virtual course is designed to reinforce concepts learned in the EMGT 1007 course with an emphasis on hands-on practical application of the Veoci tool. This training will include short exercises to practice navigating within the system’s interface and virtually sharing information across EOC personnel.

Course Objectives: The objectives of this course are to:

  • Provide a refresher of the Veoci incident management system for CMT members who have already completed initial Veoci training
  • Refresh CMT members on topics such as how to communicate with other members and how to post information to the incident status board

Target Audience: Designated WashU Crisis Management Team Members who have already taken initial Veoci training. This course may be taken at any time and as often as one wants.

Description: This virtual training platform offers user education to those public safety and emergency personnel with responsibilities for sending emergency and non-emergency notifications through the Everbridge notification software and for those issuing crime alerts and security memos.

  • Provide relevant courses and training to staff who may be expected to send an emergency alert through the Everbridge Emergency Notification System
  • Review how to craft and send notifications, how to manage data and content within the system and how to launch incident communications, all depending on which group the trainee is assigned to

Course Title: Emergency Preparedness Coordinator

Description: This class is intended for employees that are designated by their department as Emergency Preparedness Coordinators (EPCs) in order to give them the basic knowledge of what to do when an emergency occurs such as a fire, tornado or medical emergency. EPCs are expected to share this knowledge with their department to ensure that other employees, students and visitors know what to do and where to go during an emergency.

Course Objectives: At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define what an EPC is and explain their roles and responsibilities.
  • Teach employees how to prepare for, and respond during, various emergency scenarios.
  • Utilize tools and resources that will help them to be better prepared in the event of an emergency.

Description: This class is intended to give faculty, staff and students a better understanding of what their options are when confronted by a person committing violence or an active shooter situation at the university. Participants will learn the Run, Hide, Fight, Report method and how the university will respond to an emergency of this nature.

Course Objectives: During this course, participants will:

  • Learn the Run, Hide, Fight, Report method of active shooter response.
  • Use case studies and past incidents to illustrate which response may be the best for a given situation.
  • Learn about the WashUAlert system and which actions employees and students should take when they receive an emergency notification.

Target Audience: WashU faculty, staff, and students who wish to gain a better understanding of how to respond during an active shooter/person with a weapon event.

Course Title: Hazardous Material Incident Response Awareness

Description: This course meets the objectives of NFPA 472, 2008 edition and OSHA 29 CFR1910.120. Topics include: Laws and standards of hazardous materials; identifying placards and containers; recognizing when there is a presence of hazardous material; understanding material safety data sheets and shipping papers and using the North American Emergency Response Guidebook (NAERG). Instructors are from the University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute. Pre-approval required for registration.

Course Objectives: At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize and identify the clues that determine the presence of hazardous materials.
  • Research and evaluate exposure information.
  • Make decisions and execute First Responder actions.

Target Audience: Staff members who may respond to incidents involving hazardous materials.
