IT Governance Purpose

The purpose of WashU IT Governance is to align our IT strategies with business strategies, effectively manage the IT resources available, ensure that our investments in IT enhance the overall success of the university and contribute to the realization of ImpacT, the IT Strategic Plan, and WashU’s Here and Next.

Our IT governance will be informed by university strategies, priorities, financial imperatives, and constraints.

IT Governance Goals

Aligning investment decisions with strategic priorities
Empowering decision making at the appropriate level
Developing and prioritizing technology roadmaps
Validating risks are mitigated and benefits realized
Clarifying representation, roles, and responsibilities

IT Governance Organizational Structure, Roles, and Responsibilities

The WashU IT Governance structure is made up of three primary committees that collectively set strategic vision and priorities, make investment allocation decisions, align services and project portfolios to strategy, and make service and project prioritization decisions: IT Executive Committee, IT Investment Committee, and Domain Committees.

Their tasks are:

  • Make informed investment decisions and ensure the benefits of these investments are realized
  • Create and manage an annual IT portfolio
  • Establish multi-year domain strategies and roadmaps
  • Enable effective decision-making at the designated level to reduce the time needed to develop, review, approve, and execute the annual portfolio
  • Support our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion values by providing university-wide collaboration, feedback, visibility, and transparency
  • Establish clear accountabilities and responsibilities for each committee and advisory group
  • Work in conjunction with university finance to align university cadence for capital and operating planning and budgeting
  • Incorporate out-of-cycle requests as part of the overall governance and prioritization processes
  • Measure and review the performance of IT Governance to ensure continued alignment with changes to our organizational structure, business priorities, and strategic vision

The committees may be supported by Domain subcommittees and Service Advisory groups, created at the discretion of Domain Committee Chairs and IT Senior Leadership
